Definitions

Browser - This is the software you use to access the Internet. The most popular browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Domain Name - This is the name of your website. For example, www.EastmanCreations.com

Favicon - Some sites will have a very small icon next to their address and if you drag and drop the site onto your desktop will have a slightly larger icon, customized to their site. It can be a company logo, letters or a very small picture. This is actually quite easy to do and is included in our service - either a couple letters or based on artwork you supply (or we can develop for an additional fee). There are many examples of favicons in use. This site uses the letter "E," for instance.

There is one limitation to favicons you need to be aware of. Like many things on the web, they do not act consistently. For instance, if you change to a new favicon, the PC that has already accessed that site will have stored the old one and usually doesn't look to see if it was updated. If you go to a different PC that hasn't accessed that website before, it will load the new favicon.

ISP - Internet Service Provider - This is the company who provides your physical connection from your home or office to the Internet or world wide web.

MS Office - Microsoft Office is the worlds most popular office productivity suite. It includes programs to manage eMail, text documents, spreadsheets, overhead presentations, etc.

Outlook - This is an eMail program from Microsoft. Outlook Express comes free with Windows but is not as fully featured as Outlook that comes as part of the Microsoft Office suite of products.

Search Engine - This is a site like Google.com where a person searches the web for information.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization. This is the science of how to get your website listed high - ideally on the first page - of search engines. There are many things that can be done to obtain higher rankings and this can be quite expensive. What EastmanCreations.com provides is setting up basic key words related to your site so search engines are more likely to list your site high when someone does a web search and hand submitting to the most important search engines.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator - This is very similar to a domain name, but can include more information, such as http://www.EastmanCreations.com/products/website.htm.

Web host - This is the company/service where the files which make up your website are accessed by people on the world wide web. This is not necessarily the same as your ISP, although it could be if you choose to have your website hosted by the same company that provides your internet connection. It is recommended to have a different web host from your ISP so if you move or change internet providers you will not loose your website.
